Due to the destiny, the old Piraeus'
sign is no longer in Piraeus. The city during the medieval ages lost its ancient
name and was called "Porto Leone". In fact during the 14th century a real
lion, of course of marble, was taking care of the port and it was the first
thing the travelers saw once they arrive to the old and once prosperous Athens's
harbour.
This description of the lion marble
appeared in a lot of antique documents. Although, during the Fr. Morozini's
expedition against Athens it was stolen and taken to Venice, where you can
visit it today. Nowadays, in Piraeus only a copy is there to protect the port...
