Port

The port of Piraeus is today a nodal connecting point between mainland and island Greece. Its central port accounts for 72% of the volume of total short-sea shipping passenger movements in Greece.

With more than 12 million passengers annually, Piraeus occupies the top position among all Mediterranean ports and the third place, worldwide. Moreover, in over 30.000 ships' calls per annum, some 13 million M/T of cargoes and 800.000 T.E.U.'s flow through the port of Piraeus, rendering it one of the most important hub-centers in the Mediterranean Sea.

Port of Piraeus plays very important role for country's economy. Its strategic position of Piraeus at the crossroads of three continents, namely Europe, Africa and Asia, in conjunction with its special features described earlier, as well as the prospects of an EU enrlargement to the East, place Piraeus at the dominant spot within the transport networks of the European Continent.
Actually, the Port has been running since 2 May 1999 under the legal status of a corporation. A new era begins for the port of Piraeus.
